Movies about dance have been around since the beginning of motion pictures. The popularity of these movies often comes in cycles, but the ones that are made last forever. You can’t say dance film without mentioning Fred Astaire. His movies such as Swing Time and Shall We Dance showcase his phenomenal talent, and that talent persists even as he gets older in such films as Funny Face and Daddy Long Legs. Dance films however are not relegated to the 1930s or 1950s. The 1970s saw such films as Grease and Saturday Night Fever; both films staring John Travolta. Of course, you cannot forget about the immortal cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The 1980 film Fame gave dance films a human touch as it chronicled the lives of dance students trying to make it big. Cannon films defined 1980s dancing with their films Breakin’ and Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo. Currently, the king of dance films can be found in Disney’s High School Musical franchise. While dance films haven’t seen the type of success it once had in the 1930s or 1970s, the movies that were made are timeless and are always guaranteed to entertain audiences.
